Roald Dahl
Answer:
The narrator of the story the umbrella man is a girl of 12 years. One day she goes to London along with her mother as she has an appointment with the dentist. After completing the dental treatment they decided to go to a cafe. When they came out of the cafe at 6:00 p.m. they find that it is raining quite heavily. They plan to take a taxi to get back home however, all the taxis are occupied. While waiting for a taxi an old man approaches them who is about 70 years is dressed like a gentleman and has good manners. In a hesitant tone he asks the mother for a favor. He says that he has left his wallet at home. He is willing to give away his expensive silk umbrella for just a pound , so that he can take a cab home. The mother is suspicious but the man convinces her that he is speaking the truth. He refuses to take the money as charity. Finally the man gives the umbrella and takes a pound .
But he does not take a cab. Instead he rushes to a pub (THE RED LION ) and drinks a large dose of whiskey. He then picks up an umbrella belonging to another patron ( customer) and sells it to another man on the road. Thus the old man looks like honest gentleman but actually he is a cheater, soon after she is shocked to discover that the old man is a cheater / trickster.
Conclusion : The mother and the girl find out that the old man is a cheater / trickster who steals umbrella's to get money for whiskey
